University initiatives tackling climate change through science, design, and sustainable innovation.
The global effects of fossil fuel consumption and climate change underscore the urgent need to change the way we power daily life and safeguard our planet.
Every person at Penn, and all that we do, connects to the existential challenge of climate change. Led by Penn’s Vice Provost for Climate Science, Policy, and Action, Michael Mann, the University is bringing its full scope of expertise to face this pressing crisis head-on. From advancing energy science and policy across disciplines to shaping and sustaining the built environment, Penn is expanding efforts to recruit top talent, drive innovation, and implement best practices institution-wide.
The following initiatives present opportunities to support innovations in clean energy and environmental sustainability at Penn.
An overwhelming scientific consensus asserts that human activity is having an unintended negative impact on the global environment. The new Vagelos Laboratory for Energy Science and Technology building, located at the intersection of 32nd and Walnut Streets, is accelerating the pace of scientific advances in sustainable energy at Penn, forging the path to urgently needed solutions.

Together with planners, designers, policymakers, and communities, the Ian L. McHarg Center at the Weitzman School of Design is strengthening research and advocacy in support of the Green New Deal, a plan for centering justice, jobs, and rapid decarbonization across the United States. Significant job losses, our nation’s crumbling urban infrastructures, and climate-related natural disasters make this work more critical than ever.
