University initiatives tackling climate change through science, design, and sustainable innovation.

The University of Pennsylvania is confronting climate change with urgency, innovation, and collaboration. Across all schools and centers, Penn is leading research, policy, and practice to reduce emissions, build resilience, and protect communities. Penn is also a leader in sustainability through our operations, making steady progress towards our long-term goals, including carbon neutrality by 2042.

Philanthropy fuels these efforts, enabling Penn to recruit the best researchers in the field, expand green infrastructure, and pioneer new solutions. In 2024, a transformative $10 million gift launched plans for the Penn Climate Sustainability Initiative, accelerating work in this priority area.

Penn’s climate initiatives are overseen and connected through the Office of the Vice Provost for Climate Science, Policy, and Action. Led by Sanya Carley, Mark Alan Hughes Faculty Director of the Kleinman Center and Vice Provost for Climate Science, Policy, and Action, the office coordinates research, education, and policy engagement across disciplines.
