A Celebration of All Things Penn

Data Science Has Its Big Debut

The School of Engineering and Applied Science recently broke ground on Amy Gutmann Hall, a new home for data science at Penn. Scheduled for completion in 2024, what was formerly a parking lot will have undergone a jaw-dropping transformation. The 116,000-square-foot facility will be a state-of-the-art hub for cross-disciplinary collaboration that will harness expertise, research, and data across Penn’s 12 schools and numerous academic centers. Every detail was considered in the building’s design, which includes a hub for public outreach on data science and artificial intelligence, research centers working on bio-inspired paradigms for computing, and laboratories focused on data-driven, innovative approaches to cost-effective health care. “Cascode,” a 60-foot public art installation by polymedia artist Eto Otitigbe, was commissioned for the space’s exterior. The piece will translate crowdsourced data into interactive artwork that is representative and inclusive of the West Philadelphia community.

Home Court Advantage

The newly renovated Penn Squash Center, made possible thanks to donor support during The Power of Penn Campaign, is home to the 2022 Ivy League men’s squash champions. Considered one of America’s finest squash facilities, the Center played host to games during a dominant, undefeated regular season. A 9-0 victory over Cornell in February sealed the second outright Ivy League title in Quaker history. Women’s gymnastics took home the Gymnastics East title, men’s lacrosse won the Ivy League Tournament championship, the women’s outdoor track team claimed the 2022 Outdoor Ivy Heptagonal championship, and baseball won a share of the Ivy League championship. Go Quakers!
