Sniffing out Coronavirus

Dogs’ sniffing skills are legendary. They can also be lifesaving.

As the coronavirus pandemic gained a foothold in the United States, scientists and researchers at Penn’s School of Veterinary Medicine mobilized in search of innovative solutions to beat COVID-19.

With an infusion of resources from the Penn Vet COVID-19 Research Innovation Fund, a brand-new pilot program began training scent detection dogs to identify samples from COVID-19 positive and COVID-19 negative patients. This month, researchers at Penn Vet’s Working Dog Center have released findings indicating that dogs can be trained to detect the presence of a COVID-19 infection based on scent, with 96% accuracy.

The results represent one more tool in the fight to stop the spread of a deadly virus. Find the full story, and more dog photos, in Penn Today.
