Democracy and Truth

Promoting democratic values and institutions

The University is committed to advancing democracy and truth, recognizing these pillars as essential to societal progress. Our strategic framework, In Principle and Practice, positions Penn as a global leader in promoting democratic values and institutions—as well as the truth-seeking approach foundational to all universities.

The newly launched Penn Center on Media, Technology, and Democracy unites six Penn schools to conduct empirical research on digital media’s impact on democracy and create near real-time dashboards to provide a clear view of the current media landscape. Draw Down the Lightning grants for faculty, staff, and students encourage new interdisciplinary projects that address major challenges in the world today—including efforts to advance truth and democracy.

The following areas promote informed discourse, combat misinformation, and strengthen the democratic fabric of society.
