The Social and Structural Toll of COVID-19

Why social distancing is the best tool we have in fighting the pandemic

Alison Buttenheim, a behavioral epidemiologist at Penn’s School of Nursing, and Carolyn Cannuscio, a social epidemiologist at Penn Medicine, agree; social distancing is the most effective strategy for stopping the spread of COVID-19.

In a special episode of the Penn Nursing podcast Amplify Nursing, Buttenheim and Cannuscio joined forces to speak out on why communities need to practice social distancing and how to combat some of the resulting social and structural implications. This episode also stresses the importance of treating holistically all facets of a global health crisis to formulate the best strategy for keeping our communities safe.

The collaboration between the School of Nursing and the Perelman School of Medicine to educate the public and provide front line patient care in the face of this pandemic exemplifies the importance of advancing knowledge across disciplines – a key priority of The Power of Penn Campaign.

In line with Penn Nursing’s commitment to innovation and breaking boundaries in health care, the School describes its Amplify Nursing podcast as featuring “guests that defy stereotypes, define practice, and disrupt convention.” Listen to the special episode on COVID-19 below or subscribe on iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
